Retractions and corrections:

Eric did not eat my egg (although once I did see him eat one of said hard-boiled eggs which may have supported my theory). However, I still find him quite lovable.

Also, State School played an awesome show last night. Ask me about the time Stza from Leftover Crack and Choking Victim tuned my ukeulele mid-set for me. What a swell guy. (Pictures over at the Myspace.)

You know you love someone when…

…upon finding that the last hard-boiled egg that you were planning on eating for breakfast was eaten by this someone who, whenever you offer to cook eggs, says that they don’t really like eggs, you manage to refrain from jumping on them while they are still cozily asleep in bed and punching them in the ear.

Katy Perry sucks.

So, I’d never heard that “I Kissed a Girl” song by Katy Perry (although the Jill Sobule song of the same name is in my personal karaoke catalog) because I don’t listen to the radio and don’t really go out to bars much and the ones I do go to pretty much only cater to people who still think “Crazy Bitch” is the best song they’ve ever heard. But the kids at my work (oh yeah, I got another day care job… sigh…) keep singing it, so I look it up on YouTube while letting my arm rest after some singing saw practice.

And, oh my dear god, is this song fucking awful. Not to mention confusing, because everytime I see a picture of this girl she’s trying so hard to be really super cute and twee or whatever, and then her music is some really band drum machine crap with autotuned vocals. And what’s with this other song making fun of hipsters by calling them gay? Is she in seventh grade?

Welcome to why I don’t listen to the radio anymore!

Busy day.

Today I went to the thrift store twice and bought two dresses and I also made two skirts. Well, finished one and made another. I have been crafting like crazy for Ladyfest, this women’s music/culture/etc. thing that’s happening here in Dayton in a few weeks. I get to have my own merch booth which is pretty exciting. I’m hoping all the stuff I’m making sells there because, uh, I’m still unemployed. I guess what doesn’t sell I can put up on Etsy, but that’s just not nearly as satisfying as getting cold, hard cash for my labors.

Tomorrow is Colonel Butler’s promotion and a big party to accompany it and then on Friday I am going up to Cleveland to visit Sarah and Sean and Micah. Good times!

Sometimes you just want to hurl the phone across the room.

I somehow today managed to have two back-to-back phone conversations that were so ridiculous it was almost surreal. One was with a school district I’m trying to sub for who called and told me I needed to get a TB test before I could sub, despite some recently made ordinance that recalls that – which the other school district I’m subbing for knew about three weeks ago. So I call back to ask them about this, and they tell me that they just heard about it today. And even though they know it’s going into effect, they haven’t been “officially notified” of it and therefore apparently cannot officially tell me that I don’t need one yet. Although they know I don’t need one. What?

Then I called a place back about a job and when they transfered me over to the manager, I’m pretty sure they had either just woken up from a nap or were high on something because I had to endure a six minute conversation of which at least four of the minutes were comprised of, “Uh………… um………. well………. um,” to the point where I found myself staring at my phone with a furrowed brow.

I think I’m going to go back to school to get a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) endorsement on my license, which might hopefully make me more hireable. Is there a way to just get paid to go to school forever? Because that would pretty much be right up my alley. This whole job hunting thing is just way too frustrating, especially considering the people you have to apparently deal with…

Down on the farm

So yesterday Eric, Noelle, and I went out to this barn in The Middle of Nowhere, Indiana to try and record a demo for State School (which, to catch up, is a band the three of us have started mostly because we all play ukulele and live in the same house so therefore have lots of time to practice). Our friend Darrel was recording us and this is his grandparents’ barn.

Of course, the nice weather we’d been having lately broke into something more summery, so it was horrifically hot and stuffy in the loft of this barn, making it rather difficult to want to do anything, let alone having to do the same thing over and over and over again. On the plus side, being a band consisting of mainly ukuleles and other small instruments, we at least did not have to haul lots of heavy equipment in the heat. We did manage to get four songs down, which will hopefully not suck too much.

When I take over the world, I will

1. Banish all a capella groups.

2. Ensure that I never have to sit through someone explaining to me how to use a website ever again.

July 29, 2008

It’s been a while.

Man, I love Staind. PSYCHE. And yet, I’ve seen them in concert. With Chevelle. Mind you, I wasn’t there voluntarily to see them. I was shilling Bud Light to rednecks with Rogue. And I had to endure several of the other girls bragging about how their husbands were super jealous that their wives got to see Staind and they did not and meanwhile I was replaying my earlier conversation with Eric in my head where he said that Staind was stupid and I shouldn’t go. I think that pretty thoroughly encapsulates why we never quite fit in in Fayetteville.

Anyway. To play catch-up: I am back in Dayton now and things are pretty sweet, except I cannot seem to get a job of any sort, qualified or otherwise. I have pretty much resigned myself to the idea that I will be subbing next year (although I swear I’m still looking for actual teaching jobs, DAD) and have picked up applications for a couple of local districts. However, I’ve also just been looking for something easy to do in the evenings to make a little extra money, and that’s been proven difficult as well. For instance, I went with my friend Maria to this new restaurant that’s opening up – one of those all fondue places – to try and get a waitressing job. They hired Maria and three minutes later told me they were overstaffed. Apparently Maria was the breaking point? So I can apparently neither get jobs that I am qualified for or overqualified for. Maybe I should just go back to school forever. Is there a way to make money from that?

Eric and I are living in a sweet house in east Dayton with a very neat roommate named Noelle, and we have started a quirky band using the wide variety of instruments we now have in this house. I’ve putting my free time to use to craft stuff that I plan on selling at this big Ladyfest music thing in September, so hopefully that’ll work out. I’ve joined the Gem City Rollergirls and am having a fun time with them as well.

Really, everything’s going pretty great.

Carolina on My Mind

So yesterday Rogue had the awesome opportunity to scrimmage against the Carolina Rollergirls. They are currently the third or fourth (not certain which) best team in the nation. Needless to say, it was quite the complete and thorough ass-kicking, but honestly I was so excited just to be there that I didn’t really mind. It’s hard to be too upset when you’re getting to skate with amazing derby girls like Princess America and Roxy Rockett and Shirley Temper, even when they’re completely beating the snot out of you. To also give us a little credit, we were running with about half experienced players and half new girls, but still… it’s obvious as to why they’re one of the best teams in the country. Their teamwork is impeccable. It was a great time and they were all super nice. Unfortunately I fell and reinjured my bad knee. Not as bad as before, but it is definitely swollen and hurty.

In other news, the move home begins very soon. Hooray!

180 days later

Well, I’ve officially survived my first year of teaching. Technically, the rest of the county was done yesterday but some of us had to go an extra day because some people apparently need some anger management therapy

So there we have it. I am still trying to get a teaching job home, so my soul hasn’t been crushed yet. Bring on the next batch of unruly teens.
